Brittany Ferries acquires SUPERFAST V
In a surprise move, Brittany Ferries has acquired the Greek ferry SUPERFAST V from Attica Holding. With her service speed capability (28 knots ), it seems logical if she in the first place will be used on the route to Santander, where the company has
lately developed considerable freight volumes.

The vessel was delivered in 2000 at Howaldtswerke in Kiel in a package consisting of 2+4 vessels with two different configurations, of which the latter four have already been disposed of to Tallink
and SeaFrance. SUPERFAST V has a capacity of 1,608 passengers of which 842 in beds, and 712 cars or 1,926 lanemetres. She was built at a cost of USD 112.5 million. The price Brittany Ferries had to
pay for SUPERFAST V has not been made official.
Superfast Ferries have acquired two Apuania-built ropax vessels recently and with falling volumes on the Adriatic Sea, the removal of yet another ferry can be seen as a consolidation though at the
same time, competitor Minoan Lines has added ferry capacity.
When Brittany Ferries started to use its Channel ropax COTENTIN to make additional weekend sailings to Santander, it surprisingly achieved an instant success and the crossings have later been
increased to twice a week. Freight vehicles are sailing when the roads are banned for driving. The current Brittany Ferries mainstay for the passenger service to Spain is the PONT-AVEN. She is
likely to remain there as she has become very popular among British vacationers with her high comfort. The move is probably rather to be looked upon as a concentrated effort to strengthen the
UK-Spain corridor which would also have environmental benefits when lifting volumes from the roads.
